Water is Life

Good day everyone,

My name is Sofonie Dala, and welcome to our program: Water is Life.

From 23 to 27 August, the world gathers for World Water Week 2026 under the theme “Water for People and Progress,” advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation.

Water is essential for life. It sustains our bodies, supports our health, and is vital for daily activities like drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Staying hydrated keeps our bodies functioning, while lack of water can lead to serious health problems.

Yet, millions still lack access to clean water.

Water is not a luxury — it is a human right.
Water is life, and together, we must protect it for all.

“Water for People and Progress.” This important global platform brings together policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and civil society to advance solutions for a more just and water-secure future.

Water is fundamental to human survival and the preservation of our planet. It is not just a resource — it is life itself. Every day, we depend on water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and maintaining basic hygiene. Beyond these visible uses, water plays a critical role inside our bodies: it regulates temperature, supports digestion, transports oxygen and nutrients to our cells, and helps remove waste.

Maintaining proper hydration is essential for our health and well-being. Drinking enough water allows the body to function efficiently, keeping our organs working, our joints lubricated, and our energy levels stable. Without sufficient water, dehydration can occur, leading to fatigue, headaches, and, in severe cases, serious health complications.

Yet, despite its importance, millions of people around the world still lack access to clean and safe water. This reality challenges us to rethink how we manage, protect, and share this vital resource.

As we engage in this program, I invite you to reflect on the true value of water — not only as a necessity, but as a human right and a foundation for sustainable development.

Water is life. And together, we must ensure it flows for everyone.
